Currently clients accessing therapeutic services through psychotherapists and counsellors are not able to claim Medicare or many health fund rebates. The Australian Counselling Association, on behalf of its members, is working with the Health Insurance Commission and other bodies to resolve these rebates issues.

The Medicare rebate is approximately $85 in Australia and a referral from a GP is required. The fee for Medicare providers is around $150-$245; therefore the out of pocket cost is anywhere between $65- $145. The average counselling / psychotherapy fee with a non-Medicare provider is between $75-$180 so it works out much of a muchness. Medicare and the health funds usually restrict the number of sessions available (Medicare is up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year).

Please note – Couple Counselling is not covered under Medicare mental health program.

I have a Medibank Private provider number. For further information on your Medibank Private’s health plan cover please contact them directly.

You do not need a doctor’s referral for your consultation with me.
