Medicare / Health fund Rebates:

Currently clients accessing counselling services through psychotherapists and counsellors are not able to claim Medicare rebate. The Australian Counselling Association, on behalf of its members, is working with the Health Insurance Commission and other bodies to resolve these rebates issues.

The fee for Medicare providers is around $170-$245. The Medicare rebate for a 50minutes session is approximately $84 or a bit more if it’s with a clinical psychologist. A referral from a doctor is required. The out of pocket cost after rebate is anywhere between $86 – $121. The number of therapy sessions available under Medicare is restricted to 6 or maximum 10 individual sessions per calendar year.

The average psychotherapy/counselling fee with a non-Medicare provider is between $75-$180, so it works out much of a muchness. You do not need a doctor’s referral and there is no restriction on how many sessions you have a year.

I am a provider for Bupa Health, Medibank Private and the Police Health Fund. Please contact your health fund directly for further information on your health insurance cover.

Please note – Family and Couple Counselling is not covered under Medicare mental health program, unless one partner is diagnosed as having a bipolar or depression condition and couples counselling may help to address it directly.

Online counselling is available on request.
