Currently clients accessing therapeutic services through psychotherapists and counsellors are not able to claim Medicare or many health fund rebates. The Australian Counselling Association, on behalf of its members, is working with the Health Insurance Commission and other bodies to resolve these rebates issues.

The Medicare rebate is approximately $85 in Australia and a referral from a GP is required. The fee for Medicare providers is around $150-$230; therefore the out of pocket cost is anywhere between $65- $145. The average counselling / psychotherapy fee with a non-Medicare provider is between $75-$180 so it works out much of a muchness. Medicare and the health funds usually restrict the number of sessions available (Medicare is up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year).

Please note – There is no Medicare rebate for couple counselling.

I have a Medibank Private provider number, you may claim part of my fees through them if you have a policy with a “package bonus” feature. For further information on your Medibank Private’s health plan coverage please call them on 132 331 to check that you have the right policy that includes rebates for counselling services.

You do not need a doctor’s referral for your consultation with me.
